First official portrait of King Charles released after his coronation

Buckingham Palace on Monday released the first official portrait of King Charles since his coronation on 6 May. Photographer Hugo Bernand captured this historic photo. In the now-viral photo, Charles can be seen wearing his royal purple tunic and robe of estate, the Imperial State Crown and holding The Sovereign Orb and Scepter.

According to PeopleFor the portrait, Charles sat on a pair of 1902 throne chairs that were made for the future King George V and Queen Mary for the coronation of King Edward VII.

Weighing 1.06 kg and measuring 31.5 cm in height, the Imperial State Crown is encrusted with 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls and four rubies. The crown contains the Cullinan II diamond, the second largest stone ever cut from the Cullinan diamond, which the Royal Collection Trust says is the largest diamond ever cut.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have released four official royal coronation photographs, including a new portrait with working members of the royal family.

In a lengthy note, King Charles wrote, “As coronation weekend comes to an end, my wife and I just want to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped make this a special occasion. Charles, who acceded to the British throne upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September last year, was formally crowned king in a formal religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday.
