Five killed in wall collapse in Coimbatore | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Five guest workers died after a wall of an old compound collapsed Sugunapuram here on Tuesday.
The workers were constructing a new compound wall for a private college in Senthamil Nagar when the old wall, which was a few feet away, collapsed.

The deceased have been identified as Kolli Jeganathan, 53, Nakkela Satyam, 48, and Rapaka Kannaya, 49, all residents of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh, and Bish Ghosh, son of Shibu Ghosh, from Malda in West Bengal. Bhuban Ghosh, who was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, died late last night.
The injured has been identified as Parun Ghosh from West Bengal.
Coimbatore Mayor Kalpana Anandkumar said that the wall being built on a drain is an encroachment.
A local resident, Kristober K, told TOI, “This is the third incident of the compound wall collapsing. After every collapse, it was rebuilt.”
An official of the Fire and Rescue Services department said they received a call around 5.45 pm and reached the spot in 10 minutes. The incident took place when laborers dug a six-feet deep pit next to the existing wall. This made the wall unstable and it collapsed.
Coimbatore City (South) Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) K Shanmugam said the incident happened due to negligence. The investigation is underway and a case will be registered soon, he said. Municipal Commissioner M Pratap and Collector Kranti Kumar Pati visited the spot late in the night.
