PRAYAGRAJ: Five teenagers, all aged 15 and 16, drowned in the Ganga while two others were rescued at Mehdauri Kachar ghat in the city on Friday afternoon, police said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has offered condolences over the deaths and asked officials to provide assistance to the family members of the boys.
The incident took place when a group of seven teenagers had gone for a swim.
On being alerted, senior police authorities, including commissioner of police Ramit Sharma, along with forces rushed to the spot and carried out the rescue operation. The deceased were identified as Shani (16), Priyanshu (15) and Akash (16) of Beli and Himanshu (16) and Mulayam (16) of Myorabad.
Two others – Sonu (15) and Aryan (16) of Myorabad – were rescued by local swimmers.
ACP (Civil Lines) Swetabh Pandey told TOI: “While swimming, one of the kids lost balance and started drowning. Four others panicked and tried to save him but they, too, drowned. However, swimmers and boatmen managed to save two kids.”
He added that all the bodies have been fished out and sent for postmortem.
So far, over 45 drowning deaths have been reported in the city since January 1.
In June this year, five youths drowned in Sangam when they had gone for a swim. Despite installing billboards warning the public at several ghats and deployment of jal police personnel, people continued to enter the deep waters and risk their lives. tnn
