The West Bengal government has decided to upgrade former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly’s security to Z category. The decision was taken on May 16 following the expiry of the tenure of the Y-category security provided earlier to the cricketer. Ganguly will now have around 8 to 10 police personnel to guard him round the clock as per the new security cover category.

“Since the security cover of VVIPs had been exhausted, a review was done as per protocol and it was decided to upgrade Ganguly’s security cover to Z category. As per the new security arrangement, the former cricketer will have 8 to 10 policemen who will escort him. Will provide security,” the official said according to PTI.

Under the previous security category, Sourav Ganguly used to get three police personnel from the Special Branch and an equal number of law enforcers guarding his Behala residence. On Tuesday, representatives of the state secretariat reached Sourav Ganguly’s Behala office. A meeting was held there with the concerned officials of the Kolkata Police Headquarters Lalbazar and the local police station.

Currently, Ganguly is with the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as mentor and will return to Kolkata. “Ganguly is currently traveling with his team Delhi Daredevils and will return to Kolkata on May 21. From that day onwards, he will start getting Z-category security,” the official said.
