From pride to shame… Bombing of Prayagraj: The culture of bombing started from 1969, today more than 150 handcuffed bombers all over Allahabad

BJP’s district minister Vijay Laxmi Chandel’s son Vidhan Singh went to his aunt’s house in a safari car. His friend Pranshu Yadav was also in the car. Then 4 boys riding 2 motorcycles attacked his car with a bomb. Vidhan Singh narrowly escaped in this incident. But all the four bombers managed to escape as all of them were wearing gamchas on their faces.

Just 42 days before this incident, there were heavy bomb blasts in Prayagraj. On February 24, Umesh Pal, a witness in the Raju Pal murder case, was shot dead. Bombs were also thrown at his car and 2 gunners. Gunner Raghavendra died when the bomb exploded on his chest. In this incident, gangster Atiq’s son Asad and his accomplices are absconding.

The bombing which has become a stigma for Prayagraj today, was once the pride of this place. In the freedom struggle, the revolutionaries used handmade bombs to scare the British. Historians tell that in those days the fear among the British officers had increased so much that they did not go to the university hostel alone. There was a fear that the flying bomb might blow their rags.

In 1928, Bhagat Singh stayed in this room of Holland Hostel. It was here that he had a short meeting with his revolutionary friend Ajay Ghosh and other students.

Senior Professor Dhananjay Chopra of Prayagraj says, “The year was 1924…the freedom struggle was at its peak at that time. This was the period when the revolutionaries were divided into two different factions. First: soft party, Second: Hot party.

Moderates Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were demanding independence in a peaceful manner. At the same time, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Roshan Singh and their group of Garam Dal were answering the British in their own style. At that time the hostel of the university was the abode of the leaders of the Garam Dal. This was the place where the British officers avoided going. Because this is where the largest crowd of students used to live.”

To intimidate the British officers, the revolutionaries invented a new way of making bombs. University hostel was the most secure place. Bomb-making materials including gunpowder, shrapnel, twine and sawdust could be easily kept there. When there was a movement and the English government used to use lathis on the people, it was answered with these bombs. Due to these fierce movements, whenever Firangi used to go to the university, he used to take an army of 40-50 people with him.

In 1970 Raju Naxalite made common people bomber
According to Prayagraj’s senior historian Abhay Awasthi (Dadda), since independence there were 4 names of hooliganism in Allahabad. Rangbaaz, knife-bearer, bomber and mafia. Their names were the introduction of their work. The period of bombing here started from the 70s.

Abhay says, “Knife-wielding was common in Prayagraj before 1969, but in the Naxalite movement in 1970, people were taught to make buns from every neighborhood here. Raju became the main face of the movement. Naxalite. How to make a bomb by wrapping it in gunpowder. Raju taught all this to the people here. Since then, bombing has become a new crime culture here.”

The picture above is of Chandbaba, the first Bahubali of UP. Raju Naxalite had taught it to make bombs. Chandbaba was murdered in 1989. Atiq’s name came up in the murder.

“In the 80s, ‘hand grenades’ i.e. handmade bombs also dominated the student politics here. Many such student leaders were caught in Tarachand, Hindu Hostel and Holland Hall of the university, who were expert in making bombs. Opponents in university politics Bombs were used by student groups to intimidate and show their status.”

More than 150 handcuffed bombers in Prayagraj
Abhay says, “There are 4 types of bombs famous all over Prayagraj. Sutli bomb, canned bomb, socket bomb and firecracker bomb. Except firecracker bomb, all bombs are used in deadly attacks. Firecracker bomb contains pieces of glass and Iron pellets are not used. They are only used to create blasts or to spread panic.”

“Desi bombs are more famous in Allahabad than desi kattas. A bomb weighing 250 grams is made from an article worth Rs. 250, so criminals use bombs as their weapon instead of expensive guns. I estimate that you will find more than 150 Bombers with handcuffs will be found. These are the people whose hand must have been blown off while making the bomb or while throwing the bomb.”

Last year the police revealed the new gang
June 2022…Prayagraj police revealed a new gang. The name was Vivek rebel gang. It was a sensational case. Because the police named Vivek Bagi, a student of Allahabad University, as the leader and member of the gang. Vivek already has 5 cases registered against him. Abhishek Shukla, Himanshu Singh, Bhanu Pratap and Sonu Rao Katya arrived in a Swift Desire car at Harish Dhaba of Civil Lines at 10 pm on 20 June 2022. He had a can of beer in his hand. Harish’s son Chandan Arora said, “Don’t drink here, the family is eating.”

The boys did not like this talk of the hotel owner’s son. Controversy happened. The boys came to the hostel saying to see. Harish reached Dhaba again with the bomb. This time a total of 15 boys had come. Hit the bomb targeting Chandan. One bomb exploded, the other did not. Chandan escaped from the shop. On information about the bomb, the police came and caught Bhanu Pratap Yadav. But was released on 21 June. No inquiry on 22nd. Bhanu was arrested again on 23rd along with 4 accused.

Ajay Kumar, who was the SSP at that time, held a press conference three hours after his arrest. Told, “Vivek Baagi used to run the inter-state gang. These people used to make bombs in Holland Hall of Allahabad University. They used to bring their goods from Chowk. They also used to sell bombs.”

The name of the Muslim hostel cropped up in the February 24 bombing
In the Umesh Pal murder case that took place on February 24, the name of the 131-year-old Muslim hostel of Allahabad University came to the fore. Police picked up advocate Sadaqat Khan from room number-36 of the hostel. Sadaqat was accused of being a henchman of Atiq Ahmed and involved in the planning of the February 24 bombing and murder of Umesh Pal. He was living illegally in the hostel despite having completed his studies.

After Sadaqat’s arrest, Allahabad University issued a statement disavowing the Muslim hostel that it is run by a trust. In such a situation, the college administration is not responsible for any incident that happened in this hostel.

Why is the name of Allahabad University linked to the incidents of bombings? On this we spoke to PRO Jaya Kapoor. He said, “It is unfortunate that the name of the university has been linked in some cases in the past. However, we have nothing to do with these incidents. The entry-exit points of all the 4 main campuses of the university are being constantly monitored. Security For the time being, we have got the science faculty gate closed because most of the outsiders come to the campus through that gate.”

Different names of groups of bombers in Prayagraj
In July 2022, SSP Shailesh Pandey of Prayagraj made a big disclosure. While holding a press conference, he told the media the names of the group of bombers in the city. He told, “Students who carried out the bombings have formed groups named Immortal, Tandav and Maya. Prayagraj police detained 11 students, including 10 minors, from the city who knew how to make bombs as well as operate them. These students had created panic by bursting bombs outside some schools.”

In fact, materials like twine, potash, pellets and mansal are easily available at shops to make handmade bombs. If the bomb maker is passing in front of the police carrying the goods, then it is not easy to catch him. As a result, in the last one year, the police administration has arrested more than 15 people involved in different incidents of bombings.

From the year 1970 to 2022, the names of many famous bombers came to the fore in Prayagraj. According to the police records, the names of the bombers like Raju Naxalite, Pramod Pasi, Islam Nate, Pappu Daine, Chand Baba, Jagga, Salim Naini, Rajesh Pasi, Rais Tulla, Pappu Disco, Chhanne Kane, Rajesh Nauva, Kinna Pasi and Guddu Muslim are different- Appeared in separate incidents. Some of them were such that they used to make bombs and explode them while running.
