Students of Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) 2020 batch are on an indefinite hunger strike on the campus since Monday evening. The students allege that the institute has expelled a student from their batch.

According to the FTII Students’ Association, they were informed on 10 April 2023 that 5 students of the 2020 batch have been expelled from the institute without any prior notice. Though the expulsion of 4 of the 5 students was later revoked, the action against one student continued.

The student association pointed out that the institute cited several reasons, including lack of credit and attendance, for the expulsion. Regarding the expulsion of one student, the students of the 2020 batch have announced that they will not start classes until the expulsion of the five students is cancelled.

Expulsion of 4 students canceled on conditions
The institute had called an emergency academic council meeting on May 1. In this, 4 students were given re-entry on the condition of completing the remedial assignments and exercises given by the Head of Department within the stipulated time.

Whereas, a student was asked to repeat the second semester with the next batch and pay the admission fee.

Students Association – Expelled student was struggling with problems related to mental health
The FTII Students’ Association said late on Monday night that the expelled student was suffering from mental health issues for a long time. Even after the request, the administration did not pay attention to his problem. In such a situation, we demand that he should also be taken back in the 2020 batch on the conditions of the other four students without any discrimination.
