The popularity of “jingoistic” films like ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘The Kerala Story‘, and ‘Gadar 2’ has been described as “harmful” by acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah. In a new interview, the veteran actor expressed his displeasure with the success of these films directed by Hansal Mehta, Anubhav Sinha, and Sudhir Mishra. Naseeruddin was asked by Free Press Journal if the goal of filmmaking in Bollywood has changed. “Now, the more jingoist you are, the more popular you become because this is what has been ruling this country,” he said adding, It’s not enough to love your nation, but you also have to make up phantom adversaries.”
Naseeruddin Shah stated that the producers who make these jingoistic films are unaware that “what they are doing is very harmful.” “In fact, films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2 I haven’t seen but I know what they’re about,” he continued, “It’s troubling that films like Kashmir Files are so successful, yet films by Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha, and Hansal Mehta, who are attempting to represent the truth of their times, are not.” However, Vivek Agnihotri has brushed off the actor’s remarks.
‘Gadar 2’ is a sequel to the critically acclaimed ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprised their legendary roles as Tara and Sakeena in the film. The film, directed by Anil Sharma, also includes Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa, and Simratt Kaur in significant roles.
