Prayagraj: Apart from conducting recee of targets like — jewellery shops — located in rural areas, women members of Ghumantu gang also play a vital role in disposing of booty — particularly looted or stolen jewellery — through their clients or agents in native towns.
Women members of the gang compile all details of target victims like number of members in family, exact location of house, opening and closing jewellery shops-cum-house, escape route through fields. The women also chalk out plan with their men counterparts as to when and where the dacoity was to be executed and its only their male counterparts to execute the crime.
After the arrest of five women members of the gang, who were part of the Tharwai dacoity spilled the beans about gang’s modus operandi particularly role and responsibilities being performed by women gang members. A senior police official said, “We have compiled enough details about the Ghumantu gang as women gang members of all age groups play a vital role in gang.” He added, “Women members, mostly uneducated, move in groups while conducting recee and identify such locations without CCTVs. Women share all inputs with their women counterparts and decide to target those targets are close to fields.”

The gang who used to move from one village/block to another along with their families – women and children – and opt a different modus operandi. The women members of the gang often turn into small vendors selling mats and toys while executing recee. They are less interested in selling toys or mats and more in collecting information about their targets. “Women gang members mainly focus on jewellery shops located in rural areas”, said commissioner of police (Prayagraj) Ramit Sharma adding, “Once identifying the target, these women members also used to find out the entry & escape route particular the lanes where CCTV sets are not installed”, he added.
