Gitanjali Iyer, one of the first English news anchors on Doordarshan, passed away on Wednesday. He worked with Doordarshan as a news presenter from August 1971 to August 2002 (31 years).

She was the recipient of the Best Anchor Award four times. Her Linkedin profile suggested that she had been working in WWF-India since 2011 as a major, major donor.

The news of his demise triggered a flood of condolence posts on social media.

Expressing condolences, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said that he was deeply saddened to hear about the demise.

“Deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of Geetanjali Iyer, one of the first and finest English news anchors on Doordarshan and All India Radio. A pioneer and pioneer, she brought credibility, professionalism and a distinct voice to every news report , left a mark. Indelible mark in journalism and broadcasting industry. My heartfelt condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Thakur tweeted.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also expressed grief over the death of the news anchor.
