Hours after it was a hoax image saying that Gmail is shutting down, causing a stir in the tech industry, owner of X platform (formerly Twitter) Elon Musk hinted that the social media platform will launch an email service to rival Google’s offering.

Gmail shutdown ‘fake news’
His post quickly gained traction on the social media platform as people were greeted with rumours about Google’s plans to phase out Gmail. An image circulating on social media suggested that Gmail would be discontinued in August 2024.
However, Google debunked this claim, stating that “Gmail is here to stay.” However, it is to be noted that Google is shutting down the basic HTML view and transitioning users to the service’s ‘Standard’ view.
Google has been showing users a new banner which says “A new look is coming soon” on its sign-in page. It also noted that the tech giant is working on improving its sign-in page with a more modern look and feel.
The change aligns with the company’s Material Design theme which is available across several other products.
