Gohar Ali Khan re-elected as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman | World News – Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has once again been elected as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), making him the only person to hold the position twice in the party.
The PTI announced that after the withdrawal phase of candidates, Khan was the only one remaining for the position.
Meanwhile, Omar Ayub Khan has been elected as the PTI’s central general secretary .Yasmin Rashid, Ali Amin Gandapur, and Haleem Adil Sheikh have also been elected as the presidents of the party for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, respectively, as no other candidates came forward to contest against them.
The PTI will be organizing intra-party elections in Quetta to fill the position of Balochistan president. The final result of the election will be announced by the Federal Election Commissioner on March 3, 2024.
This round of intra-party elections was held after the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision on the PTI’s internal election, which resulted in the party losing its electoral bat symbol.
Last year, Imran Khan, the party founder who is currently incarcerated, stepped down as PTI chief to avoid legal implications. He had nominated Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as his successor.
The PTI conducted intra-party polls on December 2, 2023, as per the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan. However, irregularities in the polls led to the PTI being barred from using its ‘bat’ symbol for the February 8 election.
Despite winning a majority of the seats, the PTI has chosen to sit on the opposition benches instead of forming a coalition government with its rivals, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
PTI-affiliated candidates have joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) in order to retain reserved seats in the lower house of parliament and the provincial assemblies.
PTI founding member Akbar S Babar, who previously challenged the party’s internal polls in the Election Commission of Pakistan, has announced that he will challenge the fresh elections conducted by the PTI leadership.
