Google Bard, the popular AI chatbot, and the rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been around for almost a year now. The chatbot recently underwent a major overhaul, now being powered by the search giant’s Gemini Large Language Model family and gaining support for generating images using the Imagen 2 model. Now, the chatbot could be in line for another major update in the form of a total rebranding.
Google Bard might be renamed to ‘Google Gemini,’ aligning with the name of the underlying LLM it is built upon. This information stems from a leaked changelog shared by app developer Dylan Russel on X, indicating a possible shift in naming. “Bard is now Gemini,” the changelog reads.
Apart from the name change, Google’s chatbot could get an “evolved UI to reduce visual distractions, improve legibility, and simplify the navigation.”
Google could also bring a new paid version of the chatbot called ‘Gemini Advanced,’ which would also feature voice chat tools akin to what you get with ChatGPT Plus and run on ‘Ultra 1.0,’ which the company is calling its most advanced AI model yet.
In addition, the same changelog suggests that a dedicated app for Gemini may also be on its way. “Get help learning in new ways, writing thank-you notes, planning events, and more with Google AI on your phone,” Google says in the alleged changelog.
Furthermore, it is said to work with Google’s own apps, including Gmail, Maps, and YouTube, and users may interact with it through text, voice, or images. This app may launch on select devices in English in the US and could expand to more countries soon.
It is also important to note that the changelog is dated for February 7, which is just a few days away from now. It is possible that we may see these changes on that day.
