At Google I/O 2023, US-based tech giant Google introduced ‘Magic Editor’, a new AI-based editing feature for Google Photos that allows users to make significant changes to their photos. This feature includes enhancing the sky, moving objects or people in photos, and removing people from the background. It will be available in Early Access for select Pixel users later this year.

According to Google, Magic Editor can automatically perform complex edits, tweaking specific parts of an image to remove unwanted objects, changing the composition by changing the subject and updating elements such as the sky.

The company said that the Magic Editor can also create new content to change the way an image is cropped and resized, and it’s a functionality that is likely to move beyond Pixel phones in the future.

Furthermore, to combat AI-generated “deep fake” images, Google has announced that it plans to provide more context for images that are found through Google Search. Images will show context such as when the image and similar images were initially indexed by Google, where an image first appeared, and where it was online.

Image information can be retrieved by clicking the three dots on an image in Google Images results, swiping up on an image in the Google app, or searching with an image in Google Lens.

The company has also introduced Immersive View on Google Maps in select cities to give users a 3D view of the terrain. Maps will soon add immersive views for routes, allowing users to “see every segment of the route” before they go. It will be released in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York in the coming months. York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo and Venice
