Google Meet will soon let users create AI-generated background images

New Delhi: Google has announced that it is testing a new feature in Meet, which allows users to create background images with artificial intelligence (AI). The company said on a support page that the feature is in testing under Workspace Labs, a trusted tester program for users to try out new AI features by invitation.

The Workspace Labs program is currently available to trusted testers in US English. The new ‘Generate background’ feature is available in Meet for desktop.

The tech giant also mentioned that the images generated are only for use within Google Meet. It explained, “The images generated by Workspace Labs are designed to bring your imagination to life at the meet, and may not represent real-world situations.”

The company also warned not to provide any personal, confidential or sensitive information while using this facility. To use the new feature, users will have to open meet.google.com and select a meeting.

Then at the bottom right of the self-view, click Apply visual effects > Create background. There, users will be able to enter a prompt. For example, “luxurious living room interior” or “a magical sunny forest glade.”

In addition, users will be able to create AI-generated background images during meetings. Last month, the tech giant introduced a new Quick Actions feature for Meet on the Web that allows users to easily access popular features.

By hovering over the top of their own video feed, users can access video effects like immersive backgrounds or fun filters to bring more fun to their meetings, and use reframing options to improve their visibility.

Users can also close video feeds of other participants using a quick action on their own video. This can be helpful when users want to focus their meeting view only on the presenter or hide participants with a distracting video feed.
