Google Messages may soon allow users to send selfie GIF, here’s how – Times of India

Google has been pouring a lot of effort into the Messages app. In the recent months, the company has released multiple features and more are on the way. One of them is a selfie GIF feature that will allow users to make short videos and use them in conversations as GIFs.
GIFs are animated images that are commonly shared on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, among others as memes or replies to messages. With an option to use selfie videos as GIFs, users may save some time in searching for appropriate animated images to respond to.
Another advantage is that even if users cannot find a GIF to respond to a message, they can create customised GIFs to react.
According to a report by AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid, the feature is hidden in a recent version of Google Messages and was added to the app in December 2023 along with the December Pixel Feature Drop. This update also brought other capabilities like Video Boost for the Pixel 8 Pro and Night Sight Timelapse for other Pixel devices.
Here’s how it works
Once enabled, the feature can reportedly be triggered by long-pressing the camera attachment icon located near the text field. When accessed, users will see a new UI with a circular camera frame.
Users will have an option to record from front or back cameras for a GIF. The feature will record a 4-second video that can be sent as a GIF. Apparently, Google will also provide a Reset button to enable users to re-record the desired video. It is not known when Google will make the selfie GIF feature available for use.
Google Messages RCS background wallpaper
Google recently rolled out a background for Messages to distinguish RCS messages from regular ones. The background showcases overlapping circles and bubbles. It is just like the blue bubble-green bubble like distinction available in iPhones.
