Google finally launched Gemini, an AI model to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4 that powers the ChatGPT AI chatbot. The company also released a video showing its capabilities, however, reports started to pour in that whatever was shown in the video was fake but it turns out that the video was staged.
The demo video on YouTube titled Hands-on with Gemini: Interacting with multimodal AI, garnered over two million views in four days.
The demo showcased how Gemini was able to understand and combine language and visual information before responding accurately, which looked pretty impressive. However, reports indicated that the video was meticulously crafted using tuned text prompts with still images.
Google also published a blog explaining how the video was made and the results that were seen in the video were a polished representation of Gemini’s capabilities.
What Google has to say
Bloomberg cited a Google spokesperson as saying that the results were real outputs from Gemini.
“Our Hands-on with Gemini demo video shows real outputs from Gemini. We created the demo by capturing footage in order to test Gemini’s capabilities on a wide range of challenges. Then we prompted Gemini using still image frames from the footage, and prompting via text,” the company was quoted as saying.
“We made it to showcase the range of Gemini’s capabilities and to inspire developers,” the company added.
Notably, Google also added a disclaimer to the YouTube video: “For the purposes of this demo, latency has been reduced and Gemini’s outputs have been shortened for brevity.”
Eli Collins, who is a vice president of product at Google DeepMind, also said that the duck-drawing demo is still at a research level and is not integrated into Google’s actual products.
Google has, on several occasions, said that it is taking a cautious approach in releasing AI technology to consumers.
