Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has opposed this move of the government. land to the landless in the Union Territory.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader alleged that the government was eyeing land in Jammu and Kashmir and wanted to turn the valley into a slum. After the removal of Article 370, Mufti said that the government is looting the resources of the union territory.

Citing information given by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in Parliament, he said that about 19,000 people are homeless in Jammu and Kashmir but the government has identified a total of 1,99,550 homeless families.

“LG announced that we are giving land to around 2 lakh people. There is little doubt as to who these landless people are. A report by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs states that around 19,000 people are landless in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Jammu and Kashmir is a green zone but they are trying to convert it into a slum. They are trying to import poverty and slums. The floodgates will open from Jammu,” he said.

Government of Jammu and Kashmir said on Monday that he has approved the proposal for allotment of 5 marla land to each of the landless Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) beneficiaries. LG Sinha described the decision as “historic” and a “golden chapter” for the Union Territory.

“A total of 1,99,550 homeless families have been identified and 1,44,000 families have been sanctioned till June 21, while the remaining will also be covered,” Sinha said.

Mehbooba claimed that the government wants to bring 10 lakh people from outside Jammu and Kashmir and settle them here. “They want to bring 10 lakh people and settle them here in less than one house in the name of houses. Why are they instigating people here?” he asked.

The former CM accused the BJP of playing vote bank politics regarding this decision. “We did not shake hands with you as refugees. Now your eyes are on our land, we will not let this happen. We will oppose it,” he said.

Asked whether refugees from West Pakistan are covered under the scheme, the LG said, “No caste or religion is being followed in the scheme.”
