The response of law enforcement and criminal justice system in cases of crimes against Dalits is ‘terrible’, says Governor

The standoff between Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and the state government has intensified with the former’s fresh taunt at Chief Minister MK Stalin that Dalits in the state face atrocities every day.

“We are talking a lot about social justice. But, every other day, there are some atrocities against Dalits… either human excreta is thrown into the water tank of a Dalit colony or they are publicly humiliated and attacked and forced to go to the temple They are not allowed to enter or their anganwadis will be segregated,” said Ravi.

The governor said the response from law enforcement and the criminal justice system has been “terrible.” “Sad to know… Only 7 percent of rape cases filed by Dalit women in our state result in conviction. 93 out of 100 rapists get away and we talk about social justice and Babasaheb.

However, the statement has not gone down well with the DMK. Senior leader TKS Elangovan said that it is because of ‘Manu Dharma’ that Dalits face atrocities across the country.

“Dalit atrocities are present in every state. Earlier, Dalits were not allowed to enter the schools. They were denied education and employment. What the Dravidian parties did was to give them education and employment. Dalits are being tortured because of Manu Dharma. Those who are promoting ‘Manu Dharma’ cannot blame others for the incidents.”

The DMK leader also linked Mahatma Gandhi’s fight to eradicate untouchability with an RSS man responsible for Gandhi’s death.

Why did an RSS man kill Gandhi? He was fighting for the rights of Dalits. Who killed him. He was against untouchability. He was killed by an RSS person. The reason for all these things is the RSS and the BJP,” said Elangovan.

An angry state BJP called the DMK an ‘anti-Brahmin and anti-Dalit’ party and demanded an apology from Elangovan.

BJP spokesperson Narayanan Tirupati said, ‘It is a known fact that DMK is anti-Dalit and anti-Brahmin. They claim that they are an extension of the Justice Party. TKS Elangovan should apologize for his statement. Rahul Gandhi Used similar words and went to court and apologised. Similarly, Elangovan should also apologise.
