Govt Job Aspirants Leaving Dharwad: Impact on Libraries and PGs | Hubballi News – Times of India

Hubballi: Many candidates, who stayed in Dharwad to prepare for competitive examinations for govt jobs are now leaving Dharwad in large numbers. The aspirants are cancelling their membership in 24×7 libraries and vacating paying guest (PG) facilities since there are no fresh govt appointments soon.
Hundreds of govt job aspirants from Haveri, Gadag, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, and other parts of the region were staying in Dharwad. As the govt has not initiated steps for fresh recruitment to various departments, many candidates are now leaving Dharwad. The libraries and PGs were overcrowded with aspirants in the last few months and now they are vacating. There are more than 60 libraries on a 2km stretch, from Saptapur to Vijaynagars Cross. Dharwad has emerged as a hub of 24×7 libraries and attracted many students to join such libraries. These libraries will be open for candidates to prepare for exams day and night.
Saptapur main road was crowded with many candidates holding books and walking on the road around the clock. However, the crowd is dwindling.
Shivaraj Hanjagi, an aspirant preparing for competitive exams for three years, said that the govt had called applications for a few posts in the police department last month. “However, in recent days govt has not called for such competitive exams,” he said.
Another aspirant, Vikas Lokapur said: “We have a good study environment in Dharwad. Many candidates from the North Karnataka region will come to Dharwad to crack competitive examinations by taking admission to coaching centres. As only limited vacancies are there in the govt sector, many are now leaving their PGs and cancelling library membership.”
“Govt should fill a maximum number of posts in upcoming days,” he urged.
The libraries and PG owners are upset regarding this development. Yallappa Garag, a manager of a paying guest facility, said PG owners are worried about the lack of candidates to stay in PGs. “Candidates are going back to their native. If the trend is going like this it will be difficult to run the PGs,” he said.
Each candidate will pay Rs 700 to 1,200 to avail of 24X7 library facility in a month and each library will accommodate more than 40 students. WiFi, drinking water and toilets have been provided in these libraries. More than 50 such libraries are functioning in the Saptapur area of Dharwad.
A library owner said that the govt has called applications for a few posts. Recently, the exam for police constable posts was held. The govt had also called applications for village accountant posts a few days back, but yet to announce the examination date. “As a result, the candidates have started to cancel their membership in libraries to go back to their native,” he said.
