Govt mulls policy to honour organ donors | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: With an aim to encourage organ donation, the state government is thinking of a policy to recognise donors.
After inaugurating the 50th free medical check-up camp in Mangaluru on Wednesday, health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said organ donation is a big contribution made voluntarily without any connection to monetary benefit.”The least the government can do to encourage such a great gesture is recognising the donors and their families by giving certificates to them. I have told my officials to work out a policy so that they are recognised,” he said.
Randeep D, commissioner, health & family welfare, told TOI: “We’re considering giving a certificate or an appreciation to the family of the donor. We will move a proposal to the government in this regard. Once that is done, it will become a routine matter whenever such donations happen.”
The state is also studying the Tamil Nadu-model of giving full state honours for organ donors. “We’re considering sending a team there to study it. This will require the involvement of other departments and take time. We’ll start with something simple yet meaningful. The state stands by the donors’ families in true appreciation where selfless contribution is made, and the aim is to create more awareness, thus urging people to pledge their organs,” he pointed out.
