Gross box office collections in first half of 2023 below ₹5,000 crore: Report

New Delhi: For the first time ever, India’s cumulative box office collections for films released across languages ​​between January and June fell below Rs. 5,000 crores. were on gross collection 4,868 crore for the first six months of calendar year 2023, down 15% year-on-year, according to a report by media consulting firm Ormax.

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathan’ was the top film in the first half of 2023, contributing over 13% to the total collections so far this year. Hindi language share to increase from 33% to 37% in 2022, while Kannada language share to drop from 8% to just 2%.

It is estimated that ‘Pathan’ is made in all languages 646 crores at the box office, followed by the mythological film Adipurush 333 crore, political drama The Kerala Story ( 263 crores) and the Tamil films Varisu ( 212 crores) and Ponniyin Selvan 2 ( 206 crores).

The positive thing is that the second half of 2023 has a strong line-up of films that are expected to do well, especially Jawan, Salaar and Tiger 3, the report said.

The success of KGF: Chapter 2 and RRR resulted in the combined language share of the four South Indian languages ​​rising to 50% in 2022, while Hindi stood at only 33% (including a sizeable contribution from the dubbed versions of the two southern films). So far in 2023, the Hindi language share is set to fall to 37%, while the share of the South languages ​​has dropped from 50% to 44%, mainly due to a steep decline in the Kannada language share, from 8% (2022) to 2% (January to June 2023), the report said.
