Gujarat Rains News: Gujarat’s most rain-deficient August in over a decade | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: This year, monsoon started on a high note with Cyclone Biparjoy‘s impact, bringing over 75% of the seasonal rains to the state by July-end.
However, those wishing for that last good spell of rainfall before the season ends may have to face disappointment.

Gujarat rain

With no strong system in sight, there are little hopes of a mid-September monsoon revival.
Gujarat recorded above-average rainfall in June and July but El Nino affecting the entire country meant that the state received only 20.9mm of rainfall against the average of 206mm.
This low monsoon performance could impact reserves of drinking water and irrigation supply, said experts.
However, the overall rainfall of 673mm so far is 13% higher than the normal average rainfall. The discrepancy is primarily between Saurashtra and Kutch on one hand and the rest of Gujarat – north, central and south – on the other.
While Saurashtra and Kutch have already recorded more than 100% seasonal rainfall, several districts in Gujarat are deficient.
Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are among the most deficient districts this year and in all, seven districts have recorded more than 25% rainfall deficiency so far.
Manorama Mohanty, head of India Meteorological Department (IMD) Gujarat, said that in the past decade, the year 2015 held the record with 87% rainfall deficiency.
“This year surpassed that with 90% deficiency. Regions in north and central Gujarat are the most deficient,” she said.
Met department officials added that projections for September aren’t very promising either but added that a spell is expected in the second week, if conditions get conducive. Rainfall may be concentrated in parts of south Gujarat till September 8, they said.
Experts say each monsoon is unique in terms of rainfall patterns and factors that affect them.
In several years, Gujarat has recorded rainfall even in October, completing 100% of the seasonal rainfall. However, this disrupts the sowing pattern and water storage, they added.
