Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Papua New Guinea counterpart held a bilateral meeting in Port Moresby on Monday and discussed cooperation in commerce, technology and healthcare as well as addressing climate change.

In addition, both the leaders also launched the translation of Tamil classic ‘Thirukkural’ in Tok Pisin language of Papua New Guinea.

The book, which was launched by the Prime Ministers of India and Papua New Guinea, was co-authored by Subha Saseendran and Saseendran Muthuvel, Governor of West New Britain Province.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held talks with Papua New Guinea Governor General Bob Dade at the historic Government House in Port Moresby, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

As the two sides held talks, they also underlined the importance of India-Papua New Guinea relations and the development partnership between the two countries.

After his meeting with the PNG Governor-General, PM Modi arrived at the iconic APEC House on the shores of Ella Beach in Port Moresby, where he was received by PNG Prime Minister James Marape.

PM Modi reached the Indo-Pacific country in the second leg of his three-nation tour.

Upon PM Modi’s arrival, the Indian national anthem was played and both prime ministers stood in respect. PM Modi was also given a guard of honor on arrival.

This is PM Modi’s first visit to PNG, as well as the first by any Indian Prime Minister to the Indo-Pacific country. Typically, Papua New Guinea does not formally welcome any leader who arrives after sunset. But the nation made a special exception for PM Modi, and he was accorded a completely ceremonial welcome.

Traditional folk dance was also staged outside the airport to welcome PM Modi in PNG.
