On June 12, students of Quaid-e-Azam University of Islamabad played Holi in the campus.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan withdrew the notice banning the celebration and playing of Holi in schools, colleges and universities within a day. It was released on Wednesday. It was being severely criticized across the country.

Salman Sufi, head of the Prime Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit, clarified that Education Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain had directed the commission to withdraw its controversial order letter.

According to the statement issued by the Education Commission on Thursday, the Commission respects all religions and does not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments in any way.

The Education Commission had given this order following an incident on June 12, when students of Quaid-e-Azam University played Holi in the university campus. Its photos and videos also went viral.

Maintaining the culture of Pakistan is also our responsibility
The Education Commission had further said that the Commission has the responsibility of improving the higher education sector, but it is also necessary to maintain the culture and traditions of Pakistan. We respect all religions and accept their importance, but this freedom regarding religion is only up to an extent.

Holi was organized by the Mehran Students’ Council.
The commission had advised all higher educational institutions to refrain from participating in such activities which are directly contrary to the identity of the country. This Holi program was organized by Mehran Students Council, a non-political cultural organization of the university.

Hindu students were thrashed for playing Holi in Pakistan in March

This is not the first incident regarding Holi ruckus in Pakistan. On March 6, some Hindu students playing Holi were attacked in Pakistan’s Punjab University. Hindu students were thrashed by men of hardline Islamic student organization Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT), in which 15 students were injured. Read full news…
