Hry, Pb Farmers Protest For Early Procurement & Higher Flood Relief | – Times of India

Bathinda/Rohtak/Ambala/Karnal: Farm activists in Haryana and Punjab staged separate protests in the two states on Monday to demand early procurement of their crops and payment of compensation to farmers who have suffered losses due to heavy rain and flooding.
In Punjab, farmer organisations affiliated to Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) staged protests outside the residences of AAP ministers, MPs and MLAs to seek Rs 50,000 per acre as compensation for damage caused by floods to crops and Rs 1 lakh for damage to houses. They called the Rs 6,800-per-acre relief announced by the Punjab government as inadequate. They also protested outside the houses of BJP MPs and MLAs to seek Centre’s intervention in the matter.
In Patiala, SKM activists protested near the residences of Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh, Patiala Congress MP Preneet Kaur and her husband and former CM Capt Amarinder Singh, who joined BJP last year. In Sangrur, farmers have been sitting on a road near the residence of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
In Haryana’s Karnal district, activists of BKU Charuni staged a protest to demand the start of paddy procurement from September 15, instead of October 1. The protesters said Parmal varieties of paddy had started to arrive in grain markets and private traders were purchasing them below the MSP. They submitted a memorandum for Haryana CM, to the district administration. “In the absence of government agencies, private players are procuring paddy for low prices,” said BKU (Charuni).
Protests were also held at the district headquarters of Ambala, Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar. BKU (Charuni) national president Gurnam Singh Charuni himself led the protest in Kurukshetra. The protesters also demanded that farmers be allowed to sell the silt which had been accumulated in their fields due to flooding.
In Bhiwani, BKU’s Rakesh Arya said even the millet crop was ready, but procurement was yet to start.
