Identical twins accused of cheating to get equal marks win $1.5 million defamation lawsuit

Identical twin sisters who were accused of cheating during their medical school exams have won a $1.5 million defamation lawsuit against the Medical University of South Carolina. According to a report in Insider, the twins, identified as Kayla and Kelly Bingham, were charged with ‘academic dishonesty’ in May 2016. This followed reviews of their twists, which deemed their performances remarkably similar. Reportedly, the identical sisters answered 296 questions out of 307, including 54 wrong answers.

This seemed suspicious to university officials, who immediately launched an investigation against the sisters. According to court documents, the school’s honor council accused the brother-sister pair of hinting at each other and even passing notes during exams. The council then ruled that the twins cheated during their end-of-year medical school exams. During an interaction with the portal, the twins also talked about the tough exam they faced when their school labeled them as ‘cheats’.

Kayla revealed that they had become the subject of gossip and cold reception from many people and this happened everywhere they went. “It got to the point we had to order delivery because we couldn’t go to the restaurant anymore,” Kayla said. His medical school suggested that his identical scores on the exam were more than just a coincidence. “It was devastating. We both knew we had done nothing wrong,” Kelly said. Just two weeks after the exam, the faculty of the medical school alleged that the brother-sister duo had cheated in the exam.

Now six years later, the sisters have cleared their name by winning a defamation case against the institute. The jury, which ruled in favor of the twins, also awarded them a total of $1.5 million in damages. Kelly reportedly described how the twins were given seats at the same table but were four to five feet apart from each other. Furthermore, they also explained how they could not see each other during the exam as their vision was blocked by the monitor.
