IIT-K, IICD to jointly work on market appeal of local products Kanpur News – Times of India

Kanpur: The Indian Institute Department of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Crafts & Design, Jaipur.CD) Empowering rural artisans and increasing market appeal for various products.
From IIT At the Kanpur end, the Ranjit Singh Rosie Shiksha Kendra (RSK) will oversee the implementation of the MoU objectives. RSK was established at IIT-Kanpur in 2021 with generous contributions from IIT-K alumnus, Late Dr. Ranjit Singh (BT/MME/1965) and his wife. martha carreno, The center provides necessary training and promotes entrepreneurship among rural youth, enabling them to produce high quality apparel, bags, potlis and pouches, pottery and ready-to-eat snacks.
IIT-Kanpur initiated this collaboration with IICD recognizing the importance of design inputs in enhancing the market appeal of local and rural products. IICD, being a renowned craft and design institute in India, has a rich history of empowering the craft sector across the country. The primary objective of this collaboration is to preserve traditional art and craft forms and create innovative designs for locally made products, thereby establishing a stronger relationship between artisans, craft communities and consumers.
“By combining our expertise in research, design and development with their rich heritage in the craft and design sector, we aim to empower rural artisans, preserve traditional art forms and create marketable products. We are hopeful that this partnership will contribute in a big way to the socio-economic development in Uttar Pradesh,” said Professor Harish at the signing of the MoU. To promote the development of design thinking within the crafts and handmade products sector of Uttar Pradesh, IITK and IICD will engage in student exchange programmes, joint projects and collaborative activities.
The initial focus of the collaboration will be on working with a select group of potters from Bithoor to develop a product line with greater market appeal. Thereafter, the project would gradually include various products produced under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme.
