Imran Khan’s party elects new chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan ahead of Pakistan’s election – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, one of Imran Khan‘s lawyers, was elected as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), succeeding the imprisoned former prime minister, Imran Khan. Imran Khan, the ousted Pakistani prime minister, is currently in jail and barred from participating in the .
The PTI conducted the intra-party elections held on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with voters utilising an online app to cast their votes.
Imran Khan himself nominated Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to be the chairman of the party. The Election Commission of Pakistan had instructed PTI to conduct a party poll for a new chairman if it wished to take part in the February 8 election and retain its bat election symbol.
While PTI is set to face Nawaz Sharif’s party as its main opponent, it’s important to note that the barrister chosen on Saturday will not necessarily become the prime minister if the party wins.
According to another of Imran Khan‘s lawyers, Barrister Ali Zafar, choosing Gohar Ali Khan as a replacement is considered a temporary arrangement for the party.
Imran Khan, the 71-year-old former cricket star, has been entangled in political and legal battles since his ousting as prime minister in April 2022. He has been out of the public eye since being jailed for three years in August for unlawfully selling state gifts during his term from 2018 to 2022.
Additionally, Khan is currently on trial in an official secrets case alongside his party’s vice chairman, Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Both Khan and Qureshi have denied all charges against them.
