Islamabad:

Geo News reported that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry was arrested outside the Supreme Court (SC) in Islamabad on Wednesday.

This development has come to the fore amidst the ongoing crackdown on PTI leaders and workers. According to news reports, Fawad Chaudhry was present inside the Pakistan Supreme Court at 11 am (local time) to avoid arrest.

Chowdhary was arrested after coming out of the apex court premises. The Islamabad Police has arrested Chaudhary under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and shifted him to the Secretariat police station.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf tweeted, “SVP @FawadChaudhary arrested outside Supreme Court despite being granted protective bail by IHC till 12th May. Law of the jungle in Pakistan.”

Talking to reporters before his arrest, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary said that the lawyers’ community has become weak because of infighting among them. “No petitioner has ever been arrested in this manner,” Geo News reported. He further said that the Islamabad High Court had approved his anticipatory bail a day earlier, which he had shown to the Islamabad Police earlier in the day.

According to the report of Geo News, Chaudhary said that the arrest of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has caused division in the country. He said that political opponents should be given space to pave the way for dialogue. Prior to the arrest of Fawad Chaudhry, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested PTI General Secretary Asad Umar from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s accountability court has granted the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) eight-day remand of former prime minister Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, Samaa reported. Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Basheer had earlier heard the case and reserved his judgement.

Sama said that at the beginning of the hearing, the country’s top anti-corruption body sought 14-day remand of the former prime minister. Imran’s council argued that NAB had no jurisdiction in the case, with the anti-corruption watchdog also not sharing the probe report.

He said that fair trial is the fundamental right of Imran Khan. His lawyer urged the court, “Imran Khan’s trial should be held in an open court.” According to the video posted by PTI’s official Twitter handle, after the hearing, the former PM’s lawyer held a press conference where he claimed that Khan alleged in the court that he was subjected to custodial torture and even That he was not even allowed to use the washroom.

On Tuesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Khan was arrested in a corruption case and produced before an accountability court at Police Line Headquarters. The Accountability Bureau will interrogate the former head in the police line. Protests have started in Pakistan after the arrest of Imran Khan. The protests have led to widespread destruction of properties.
