Imtiaz Ali’s highly anticipated film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ is all set to release on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi. The Diljit Dosanjh-Parineeti Chopra starrer, which promises to be a cinematic spectacle, charts the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, the highest record-selling artist of his time, Amar Singh Chamkila, often referred to as the ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab’. In a recent interview, Imtiaz Ali opened up about similarities between singer Sidhu Moosewala and Chamkila since the former was also shot dead on
May 29, 2022.
The director explained to the entertainment portal Bollywood Hungama, “The songs that I have heard of Sidhu Moosewala are very different in texture from Chamkila, but one thing is common that they were both extremely popular in the grassroots and they were very influential and they did talk about what was happening around them. So those were the common things.”
He added, “Chamkila was a slave of his audience. He wanted to always please his audience. He could never refuse his audience. This is why he ended up doing more than 365 shows in one year and sometimes these shows were not happening at the same venue. He had to travel to different villages to do these.”
Shot in real locations, the film promises to transport audiences to the vibrant and rhythmic world of Punjab’s folk music, right to the rustic Akhadaas (live music performances in villages) where Chamkila’s voice would once roar. The film stars Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot, Chamkila’s wife and singing partner.
With the maestro AR Rahman helming the music for the film and Irshad Kamil penning the lyrics, the audience will once again witness the magic of Rahman-Imtiaz-IIrshad collaboration. Adding to the excitement, both Diljit and Parineeti have lent their voices to some of the songs! For the first time, the film will showcase live music recordings done on locations, capturing the rawness and exuberance of each moment as Diljit and Parineeti sing live in the Akhadaas.
Amar Singh Chamkila will be premiering on April 12 exclusively on Netflix.
