“We need to understand that Parliament is not just about bricks, cement and steel. It is also about giving a voice to those who are voiceless. It is not a matter of chairs, space, it is not a matter of facilities. It is about the right of the opposition members to speak.”

He said, ‘Will the mike be on in the new Parliament, that is the question we have to ask. We hope that the Prime Minister will realize that Parliament is the temple of democracy and that means we should allow the opposition to speak and the mike should also be on.

According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the new Parliament House can comfortably accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha Chamber and 300 members in the Rajya Sabha Chamber.

In the event of a joint sitting of both the Houses, a total of 1,280 members can be accommodated in the Lok Sabha chamber.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament House on 10 December 2020.

The present Parliament House was completed in 1927.
