Mumbai: Staging a fine comeback, India A pipped England A by three runs in the first women’s T20 game of their three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. Chasing 135, England ‘A’, initially reduced to 40 for three in the eighth over, looked on target when their top run-getter Hollie Armitage (52, 41b, 3x4s, 1×6) and wicketkeeper-batter Seren Smale (31) added 70 for the fourth wicket, but India ‘A’ clawed their way back, taking five wickets for 21 runs in the end.
With 13 needed off the final over, off-spinner Shreyanka Patil (2-26) started off on the worst possible note, conceding five extras (wide) off her first ball, but she kept her nerve, giving away just four more runs while getting the wicket of Ryana MacDonald-Gay on the penultimate delivery and running Lauren Filer out on the last ball to to seal India’s win. The 21-year-old Patil was named as the Player of the Match.
Earlier, after electing to bat, India made 134 for seven in 20 overs. Disha Kasat top-scored with 25 (32b, 3×4). England A skipper and off-spinner Charlie Dean returned superb figures of 4-0-19-2.
Brief Scores: India Women’s A 134-7 in 20 overs (Vrinda Dinesh 22, Disha Kasat 25, Gnanananda Divya 22; Charlie Dean 2/19) beat England Women’s A 131-8 in 20 overs (Hollie Armitage 52, Seren Smale 31; Kashvee Gautam 2-23, Shreyanka Patil 2-26) by 3 runs.
