Asked whether the statement was an endorsement of the so-called peace plan offered by China, Bagchi said: “I would not be sure whether to characterize the peace plan that you have referred to as an attempt at mediation or not.”
India has been continuously pressing for the resolution of the Ukraine dispute through dialogue and diplomacy.
The BRICS statement said the ministers “recall” their national positions with regard to the situation in and around Ukraine as expressed in appropriate fora, including the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.
“They appreciated the relevant offers of mediation and good offices aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy,” it said.
“They called for the full and effective implementation of both the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Russian Federation and the Secretariat of the United Nations to promote Russian food products and fertilizers in world markets, and on the importance of allowing cereals and grains to stressed. Fertilizers will continue to reach those most in need.”
