Indian space sector is helping secure foreign exchange through launch of foreign satellites: Jitendra Singh

In an exclusive interview with Parliament TV, the minister informed that India has so far launched 385 foreign satellites, of which 353 have been launched under this government in the last 8 years, which is about 90 per cent of all launches.

He also pointed out that out of the total 220 million Euros earned from the launch of foreign satellites, 187 million Euros were generated in the last 8 years, which is about 85 percent of the foreign exchange earned from the launch of European satellites.

Jitendra Singh said, it is a matter of great pride that ISRO through its commercial arms has successfully launched foreign satellites belonging to advanced countries like USA, France, Israel, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Finland etc. Launched successfully. Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland on-board PSLV and GSLV-MkIII launchers under commercial agreement.

Responding to a question on the new space policy, the minister said, it is in the final stages as the Department of Space is in the process of setting up a predictable, forward-looking, efficient regulatory regime for space activities in the country. Comprehensive, well-defined policy for the entire scope of such activities.

He said, several steps have already been taken before June 2020 after the Modi government opened up the space sector for private participation. He said, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) is a public sector enterprise under the Department of Space, which has been empowered to bring a commerce-oriented approach to space activities.

In addition, the creation of IN-SPACe as a single-window agency for promotion and handholding of NGOs in conducting end-to-end space activities has resulted in remarkable interest from the start-up community with 111Space Startups registered on IN-SPACe digital platform as on date.

It may be recalled that the result of such revolutionary improvements is the heaviest commercial launch by India in the form of LVM3, carrying 36 OneWeb satellites on October 23, 2022, followed by India’s first private Vikram-suborbital satellite.
