After the meeting of the appeal committee of the National Medical Commission with the officials of the regional administration four days ago, the officials of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC&RI) are confident of getting approval for MBBS admissions for this academic year.

Last month, the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Withdraws permission of college to admit MBBS students this academic yearPointing out some shortcomings in the college.

“The Dean of IGMCRI participated in the virtual meeting and explained to the committee about the rectification of deficiencies pointed out by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board of NMC. We have submitted a compliance report and provided evidence on the improvement measures taken. The board is satisfied and has assured us that it will provide continuation of recognition to admit 150 students. We are expecting orders at any time. A top official said, MBBS admission will be as per the plan and the candidates need not have any apprehension. Hindu,

The Board’s inspection team had pointed out deficiencies in the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) and delay in uplinking of around 25 closed circuit television cameras installed in the medical college campus. “These issues have been rectified and we have presented evidence on working of AEBAS and uplinking of cameras,” the official said.

The college has denied reports that permission to admit students was withdrawn due to lack of an operation theatre. “While the board canceled admissions for MBBS during its first inspection, it also allowed starting postgraduate courses in surgical specialties such as general surgery, orthopedics and ophthalmology this year. If there was no operation theater in the hospital, we would not have been allowed admission in PG. About 20 PG seats in MD/MS have now been added.

The commission has also given recognition for MD Microbiology (4 seats) and MS Anatomy (2 seats) this year. Officials also said that an evaluation has begun for DNB courses in the departments of psychiatry and emergency medicine. “We are expecting approval for some more PG courses. In the next two to three years, 36 more seats will be added.
