iPhone 16 series launch: iPhone 16 may get RAM, camera upgrades; new 5G modem coming to iPhone 16 Pro phones – Times of India

With 2024 here, we can now officially say that iPhone 16 series is set to launch later this year. Analyst Jeff Pu, in a note accessed by 9to5Mac, shared details on what to expect from both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro lineups, including upgrades in specs and cameras.
According to Pu, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus siblings are getting A18 chip under their hood. This will be the first time that the base model iPhones transition to the powerful and efficient 3-nanometer technology. Along with this, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are also expected to get a RAM bump, increasing from 6GB to 8GB.
Different modems may power Pro and non-Pro phones for the first time
Moving to the premium side, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly be powered by A18 Pro chip. The note also claims that these Pro models may come with the Qualcomm X75 modem. However, non-Pro models, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, will continue to be powered by Qualcomm X70. If this happens, this will be the first time that Apple will be using different modems in its iPhone lineup. So far, all iPhones, across one series, runs on the same processor.
How Qualcomm describes the X75 modem: Qualcomm Technologies’ 6th generation modem-to-antenna solution is the first ready to support 5G Advanced, the next phase of 5G. It introduces a new architecture, a new software suite and includes numerous world’s first features to push the boundaries of connectivity including coverage, latency, power efficiency and mobility. Snapdragon X75 technologies and innovations empower OEMs to create next generation experiences across segments including smartphones, mobile broadband, automotive, computer, industrial IoT, fixed wireless access and 5G private networks.
Camera upgrades likely coming in iPhone 16 series
The iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to sport a significantly upgraded Ultra Wide camera, with its resolution jumping from 12MP to whopping 48MP. This could translate mean high-resolution photos and potentially enhanced spatial video recording.
Wi-Fi 7 for iPhone 16 Pro models
The Pu’s note claims that connectivity upgrades extend beyond cellular networks. Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are expected to join the Wi-Fi 6E party, currently enjoyed only by their Pro counterparts. This means faster speeds, lower latency, and a smoother overall Wi-Fi experience for these base models. And for the truly future-proof, the iPhone 16 Pro models may come with the brand new Wi-Fi 7 technology, offering a range of exciting connectivity improvements.
