Washington:

The Pentagon said the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria was killed in a US drone strike on Tuesday.

Pentagon Central Command spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Dave Eastburn told AFP that Maher al-Agal was killed while riding a motorcycle near Zindaris in Syria, and one of his top aides was seriously injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that Agal was killed in the drone strike.

The Syrian Civil Defense Force said one person was killed and another injured in an attack targeting a motorcycle outside Aleppo, but did not identify the victims.

Little was available about Agal, whom the observatory called the Islamic State Governorate for the Levant.

The attack comes five months after a nightly US attack on the northern Syrian city of Atmay, which killed Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Qurshi.

US officials said Qureshi died when he detonated a bomb to evade capture.
