Coimbatore: K JayaramThe 74-year-old renowned nature photographer, recipient of several national and international awards, passed away following a prolonged illness in the city on Sunday.
Jayaram, considered a pioneer in macro photography, had a species of frog (Raorchestes Jayarami) found at Valparai, and a spider (Myrmarchene jayarmani), named after him. His five decades long work in nature photography was documented in a film titled ‘Insects to Infinity’.
A loner and a native of Coimbatore, Jayaram has dedicated his life to photography and nature since the age of 14, when he first got his camera.
A relative of Jayaram said he was battling Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer, and was undergoing treatment for the last few months. He was admitted to the hospital a week ago when his condition worsened. On Sunday, many of his organs stopped working, due to which he passed away.
Environmentalists and photographers alike said Jayaram’s demise is a great loss to nature as well as the field of photography. If his first passion for photography led him to develop his techniques in developing negatives used in film roll cameras and even design lenses, he chose nature as his favorite subject for photography. The dual passion has led him to take some breathtaking photographs published in acclaimed magazines around the world including National Geographic. He twice received the distinction of excellence from the Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique (FIAP), an international organization of national associations of photography. He also wrote two books, one on butterflies and the other on Silent Valley.
