A 24-year-old youth, arrested on charges of theft in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district, was found dead inside the police station on Tuesday. Taking cognizance of the incident, the authorities suspended four policemen.

Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan IV said the accused, identified as Ashfaq Khan, allegedly strangulated himself with his trousers in the toilet of Barhi police station. He said the villagers had caught Ashfaq stealing from a house on Monday night and handed him over to the Barhi police station.

The SP said that on Tuesday he was being taken for production in the court. Earlier, he expressed his desire to go to the toilet inside the detention room. When he did not return even after a few minutes, the police went inside and found that the accused had taken his own life.

Investigation of incident handed over to SDPO

The officer said as soon as the information reached the SP, he suspended the four policemen for dereliction of duty. SP IV said that he has ordered an inquiry into the incident by the SDPO of Barhi, who will find out how the accused died in police custody.

At the same time, relatives and villagers of the deceased have alleged that Ashfaq Khan died due to torture in police custody. The villagers also protested against the incident and blocked NH-2 for some time.
