Jica Experts, Officials Focus On Devpt Of Sanitation Projects | Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: The fifth joint coordination committee meeting of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was convened under the chairmanship of divisional commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma on Monday.
During the meting, the project for Comprehensive Improvement of Environmental Sanitation in Varanasi (CIESV) was discussed. The JICA expert team on these projects is working closely with the officials of various agencies including Varanasi Nagar Nigam, Jal Kal and UP Jal Nigam.The representatives of JICA gave a presentation on the details of various ongoing and proposed projects before the divisional commissioner. It was followed by a detailed discussion.
While giving information under Solid Waste Management, the JICA team explained three rules of management for domestic waste, including separation of waste, door-to-door garbage collection and avoiding throwing garbage in the open. The efforts made by the municipal corporation under waste water treatment and environmental protection in the Kanchanpur area were also highlighted in the meeting. The Packaged Sewage Treatment Unit (PSTU) has been established in Kanchanpur and its feasibility assessment is also being done.
The divisional commissioner was apprised of the work of water supply, sewage and solid waste management, which have been completed by JICA in Phase-1. The divisional commissioner directed the municipal commissioner to organise an internal solution-oriented workshop so that the officers, who returned after getting exposure to the work being done under Waste Management in different cities, could share their experiences. Such a workshop will help identify the internal shortcomings of the city and resolve them, he said.
On works being done by the JICA , municipal commissioner Akshat Verma said under the solid waste management, the door-to-door garbage collection would be done in the new areas included in the municipal corporation in the next few months. He said at present 1,100 MT of garbage is being produced every day in Varanasi, for which continuous efforts are being made to dispose of it at Karsada Processing Unit, Waste to Charcoal Plant and Ramna Plant.
