Dharwad: The much-awaited Kalyan Nagar Railway Overbridge (ROB) in Dharwad is ready and will be dedicated to the people on Saturday.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi Will inaugurate the ROB at 5.30 pm. Before that, he will lay the foundation stone for the construction of ROB near Srinagar Circle and at railway level crossing Ganesha Nagar on Halial Road. Hubli-Dharwad West MLA Arvind Belad will preside over the function.
SVS Prasad of Swarna Construction Company, which made ROB, has also got the contract to make two ROBs.
Railway Level Crossing No. 297 connects Kalyan Nagar, Danu Nagar, Atikola and Ramnagar to Malmaddi and Station Road and thousands of people and vehicles pass through it gate Every day.
The ROB was ready for public use on March 20, but could not be inaugurated due to the imposition of the model code of conduct. The delay in opening the ROB to the public even after the code of conduct was over had drawn criticism from the public.
The ROB has been built at a cost of Rs 15 crore, with the state government contributing 50% of the cost.
Anish Hegde, Chief PRO, South Western Railway TOI was told that the dimensions of the ROB are (1x20m PSC girder) + (1x30m bow string girder) + 10x20m PSC girder). Contractor SVS Prasad said that the bridge has a road of 60 meters towards Kalyan Nagar and 200 meters towards Gopalpur. The road is 10.5 meters wide.
While there will be 1.5 meter wide footpath on both sides, 7.5 meter will be for vehicular movement. A 30 meter bowstring pre-stressed steel girder is launched on the tracks and the concrete slab is 20 meters in length.
long pending demand
The construction of the ROB was a long standing demand of the public as frequent closure of the railway gate was causing a lot of inconvenience to the commuters towards Kalyan Nagar. In the 2017 budget, the Ministry of Railways announced the allocation of funds for the construction of an over bridge/underpass near the Kalyan Nagar railway gate, stating that the local body or state government would contribute 50% of the cost.
