Kantara row: Rishabh Shetty and producer Vijay Krigandoor summoned by Kerala Police on plagiarism charges

The lead actor and director of super hit Kannada film ‘Kantara’ Rishabh Shetty and its producer Vijay Krigandur Ahad appeared before Kozhikode Deputy Commissioner of Police KE Baiju today. The director and producer of the film appeared before the investigating officer on Thursday (February 9, 2023) after the Supreme Court of India granted anticipatory bail to director Rishab Shetty and producer Vijay Kiragandur.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Padiwala had said in the order that “the petitioner shall appear before the investigating officer on February 12 and 13. If he is arrested, he shall be released.” ” Immediate bail subject to the conditions of the trial court.”

The producer and director has given his statement to the police following a complaint filed by Kerala-based music band ‘Thaikoodam Bridge’ that a song in the film was the band’s product and was not accepted by the filmmakers. The band complained that the song ‘Varaha Roopam’ in the film was actually stolen from their song ‘Navarasam’.

The music director of the film ‘Kantara’ B. Ajneesh Loknath had dismissed the allegations saying that the similarities were due to the same ‘raag’ used in both the songs. However, ‘Thakkudam Bridge’ complained that there was a gross violation of copyright law.

Kantara dominated the box office and turned out to be a huge blockbuster. Rishabh, who stars in the cast of the action thriller, recently made an exciting announcement of Kantara 2, much to fans’ delight. Urvashi Rautela can play an important role in the prequel.

Set in the fictional village of Dakshina Kannada, “Kantara” follows a Kambala champion, also played by Shetty, who comes at loggerheads with Murali (Kishore), an upright forest range officer. Kambala is an annual race, held from November to March in coastal Karnataka, in which a jockey drives a pair of buffaloes tied to a plow through parallel muddy tracks. The film was released in Kannada version and Hindi version on 30 September and 14 October respectively. Produced by Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda under Humbel Films, the film also stars Saptami Gowda and Kishore Kumar in pivotal roles.

‘Kantara’ is set in coastal Karnataka and deals with the politics of land and the issue of man versus nature. Set and shot in Keeradi, coastal Karnataka, the film stars Rishabh as a Kambala champion who is at loggerheads with Murali (Kishore), an upright DRFO officer. The film, which released on 30 September, is an action-thriller written and directed by Rishabh and produced by Vijay Kiragandur.
