Karan Johar made his directorial debut with the 1998 film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Shahrukh Khan, starring Kajol and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. Even though the film is still loved by all, KJo recently criticized the film and admitted that he misquoted gender politics in it.

Karan was promoting his upcoming directorial venture Rocky and Rani’s love story at an IIMUN event on Friday when he mentioned that Kuch Kuch Hota Hai “promotes wrong gender politics.” “I think I have grown as a person since the first film I made, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I firmly believe that the gender politics of that film was wrong. It is propagating wrong gender politics, there is a lot of superficiality in that film. Of course, the nostalgia is there so you like it, but you don’t scratch the surface of the film and see that what Rahul is doing is not really what I want all the Rahuls in the audience or all the boys in general to do,” he was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Karan also criticized Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and said that the character did ‘all kinds of wrong things’. “Rahul was saying all kinds of wrong things. They said, ‘We love once’, but they fell in love twice. He said, ‘We marry once’, he married twice. He was contradicting himself throughout the film,” KJo said.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar is currently gearing up for the release of his directorial venture Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles and marks Karan’s return as a director after over a decade. The film will hit the theaters on July 28.
