Karnataka elections: Richest candidates in the fray face a tough fight

Congress candidate from Govindrajnagar and former MLA Priyakrishna has declared movable and immovable assets worth Rs 1,156.83 crore in the affidavit.

The richest candidates of both the BJP and the Congress, who have declared assets worth thousands of crores, are facing tough competition from rivals in their respective constituencies in Karnataka.

Earlier, he had a cakewalk at his home ground.

Small Scale Industries and Municipal Administration Minister MTB Nagaraj is the richest candidate with declared assets of Rs 1,614.5 crore in his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission.

For the 2018 assembly elections, Nagraj had declared assets worth Rs 1,060 crore. The total value of the assets of Nagraj and his wife has been estimated at Rs 2,607 crore.

Nagraj is facing a tough fight from Congress candidate Sharath Bacheh Gowda. Sharath Bache Gowda defeated Nagaraj in the 2019 bypoll as an independent candidate. Now there is a direct contest between them.

Nagraj has shown a total income of Rs 96.84 crore as total income in the year 2021-22. He has Rs 29.12 crore in his savings bank account and Rs 33.08 crore in fixed deposits. He has shown a capital investment of Rs 196.54 crore in MTB Estates and Properties. He also disclosed that his wife M. Shanthakumar has a capital investment of Rs 127.32 crore in the same company.

Apart from this, he has movable assets worth Rs 372.42 crore in his name while his wife has movable assets worth Rs 163.78 crore. The current value of immovable assets in his name is Rs 798.38 crore and that of his wife is Rs 274.97 crore.

Nagraj owns a Land Rover Defender worth Rs 1.65 crore. His wife owns a Porsche worth Rs 1.04 crore. Nagraj, who dropped out of school in Class IX, was one of the prominent Congress leaders to join the BJP in 2019.

Ashok has shown an income of Rs 14.24 crore in the year 2021-22. He has movable assets of Rs 244.93 crore and immovable assets of Rs 142.27 crore.

The estimated current market value of the immovable property has been shown as Rs 970.01 crore.

He has shown a 44 per cent increase in wealth since 2018. In 2018, he had declared Rs 840 crore. Shivakumar has said that he inherited assets worth Rs 28.75 crore. He owns a Rolex watch worth Rs 9 lakh and a Hublot watch worth Rs 23.90 lakh.

He has eight apartments in Purva Midtown, four flats in Salarpuria Sattva and three properties in New Delhi. Shivakumar was arrested in September 2019 in a money laundering case and released in October 2019. After his release, he was given an unprecedented reception and the Congress promoted him to the post of KPCC President. Now the party is projecting him as the chief ministerial candidate.

Congress candidate from Govindrajnagar and former MLA Priyakrishna has declared movable and immovable assets worth Rs 1,156.83 crore in the affidavit. Priyakrishna had declared assets worth Rs 1,020 crore in 2018. He has movable assets worth Rs 935 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 221.83 crore.

He inherited property worth Rs 183 crore. BJP has fielded corporator and new face Umesh Shetty from this seat. Amit Shah did a roadshow in the constituency to ensure victory. Earlier this seat was represented by Housing Minister V. Somanna.

Congress candidate from Hebbal, Bhairathi Suresh has declared assets worth Rs 648.12 crore. He had declared Rs 416.7 crore in 2018. His movable assets are Rs 57 crore and immovable assets are Rs 561 crore.

He is up against Katta Jagdish of the BJP party, who is contesting his first MLA election. Katta Jagadeesh is the son of senior BJP leader Katta Subramania Naidu.
