MANGALURU/UDUPI: Though Monsoon is active since last fortnight, but the rain from Monday night to Tuesday affected the coastal district.
There have been reports of several houses being damaged due to floods, hill slides and artificial flooding. Around five flights were also delayed/diverted due to rain. There was power outage in some parts of the city and district.
Heavy rain expected, both Dakshina Kannada And the Udupi district administration declared a holiday on Tuesday for Anganwadis, schools and colleges in the district. Udupi has also extended the holiday on Wednesday. KSNMDC has issued a red alert on Wednesday and an orange alert for the next three days.
According to KSNMDC, heavy rains occurred at two places in Dakshina Kannada (DK). While Talpadi in Mangaluru taluk received 238 mm of rain, Naringana received 238 mm of rain. Bantwal Taluk 231 mm of rain fell.
All the taluks of DK district received 50% to 70% more rainfall than the average rainfall recorded during the day. In the last 24 hours, Dakshina Kannada district has received an average of 64 mm, Udupi 82 mm and Uttara Kannada district 52 mm.
Tuesday’s rain caused artificial flooding in several areas, especially in the Kallapu area on the Mumbai-Kochi national highway. Mangaluru MLA UT Khadar, who visited the spot, said the NHAI, while expanding the road, did not provide proper drainage facilities to carry the rain water to the other side, leading to floods. He urged the district administration to solve the problem.

In Mangaluru taluk, heavy traffic on NH 169 connecting Mangaluru with Moodabidri has been restricted due to water scarcity on one side of the road at Vanabozna near Gurupur, about 12 km from here. NH officials have reached the spot and are inspecting the site to assess the damage, and are also considering whether the road is fit for traffic for buses and other large vehicles. At present, heavy traffic is being diverted from the available routes. Traffic was affected for a long time after a tree fell on the Lalbagh-Ladyhill road until the fire department removed it.
In Udupi district too, almost all low-lying areas and adjoining areas were inundated due to heavy rains. According to the IMD, 12 stations along the coast received very heavy rains and another 10 stations received heavy rains till 3 pm on Tuesday.
Delay / divert flights: Two flights were diverted and the other three delayed due to low visibility at Mangaluru International Airport.
Dubai Mangaluru Air India Express flight arriving at 4.40 am was diverted to Bengaluru. Later arrived at nine in the morning. The Dammam to Mangaluru AIE flight scheduled to land at 5 am was diverted to Bengaluru. Arrived later at 3 pm.
The Bahrain, Kannur, Mangaluru AIE flight arriving at 7 pm would arrive at 11 pm and the Mangaluru Dubai AIE flight, which was scheduled to depart at 6.45 am, was delayed. Departed at 4.20 pm.
The flight to Kannur to Dubai through Mangaluru is expected to arrive at 10.50 am, compared to the scheduled time of arrival at 7.10 pm, as IX 813 was rescheduled to depart for Dubai at 11.40 pm, while the standard departure The time was 7.55 am.
