Khap Panchayats of Haryana and Western UP will reach Delhi’s Jantar Mantar today in support of wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Singh. Today-Thursday is the fifth day of the strike of these wrestlers. Olympians Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, who were among the wrestlers who have been demanding Delhi Police to report sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan and arrest him, have appealed to the khaps to support them. After this, Khap leaders are reaching Jantar Mantar today.

Leaders of political parties, farmers and Khap representatives are continuously reaching out to support these wrestlers against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh. In Haryana, Delhi and western UP, Khap leaders are visiting wrestlers’ homes and assuring their families to fight. Apart from farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, all the khaps of Haryana, including Chaudhary Surendra Solanki, head of North India’s biggest khap panchayat Palam-360, have come in favor of the wrestlers.

Bajrang Punia said on April 24, ‘Last time we made a mistake. We are players, we do not know politics. Today we need you, support us. Such big players are on strike. If nothing happens now, it will never happen. Join the fight of our sisters and daughters. This fight is against a Bahubali. Vinesh Phogat also made a similar appeal. After this, the Khap leaders reached Jantar Mantar and announced their support to the wrestlers.

Jagbir Malik, spokesperson of the Sarvkhap Panchayat formed by combining different Khaps of Haryana, has said that he is with his daughters. If she is crying while protesting, then something wrong has definitely happened. All Khap Panchayats are with them. Malik also talked about talking to Jhajjar, Rohtak, Sonipat and other panchayats.

Jagbir Malik is also the spokesperson of Malik Khap, the largest Khap Panchayat in the country. It includes 1430 villages of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Apart from this, Nain Khap of 52 villages of Hisar, Jind and Jhajjar and Bhanwala Khap of 30 villages have also extended support to the wrestlers.

Supreme Court hearing tomorrow

The Supreme Court will hear the petition of 7 women wrestlers on April 28. The Supreme Court said- ‘The wrestlers have made serious allegations of sexual harassment in the petition. These need to be considered. On Wednesday, the Delhi Police filed a reply to the notice issued by the Supreme Court for not registering an FIR in the same case. It said that the police is investigating before registering the case. After the investigation of the allegations will move towards registering the FIR.

The country’s Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta also told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that a preliminary inquiry is necessary before registering an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

United Kisan Morcha meeting on 28th in favor of wrestlers

Hundreds of farmers from Sonipat left for Delhi on Wednesday itself in support of the wrestlers. United Kisan Morcha leader Abhimanyu Kuhad said that he is going in support of the players. A meeting of the United Kisan Morcha will also be held on this issue on 28th April. Hitting out at WFI President Brij Bhushan, Kuhad said the central government was insulting the players. The sportspersons who brought laurels to the country are today forced to sleep on the footpath. It is unfortunate that FRI has not been registered despite complaints from women wrestlers.

On Tuesday, senior Congress leader and former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda reached among the wrestlers, while on Wednesday senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi appealed to the country to support these wrestlers by tweeting. On Wednesday, Satyapal Malik, who was the governor of 4 states including Jammu and Kashmir, encouraged the wrestlers by reaching Jantar Mantar. Senior Communist leader Vrinda Karat, Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Gupta, Mahila Congress President Neta D’Souza and many other political leaders have extended their support to these players.

Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra is also raising his voice in favor of these wrestlers.

Congress is supporting the wrestlers sitting on dharna.  Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted in his favor, while former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda himself reached among the wrestlers on 25 April.

Wrestlers on strike for the second time in 3 months

On January 18, 30 wrestlers, including wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, started a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Vinesh Phogat had alleged that Federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and coaches sexually harass women wrestlers in the national camp. Two committees were formed to investigate the allegations. After this the wrestlers called off the protest. On 23rd April they again sat on dharna.
