The formation of a separate district was supported because Koppal, which was nearby, seemed a better option than Raichur.
Since then, Gangavati has seen a lot of development. The surrounding towns are now connected by the railway network. Its Sona Masoori rice is famous in India and abroad. The road network has expanded. Better educational institutions are open. The only Rice Tech Park in the state is located next to Karategi, Since so many important developments are taking place, if a separate district including irrigated areas is created, development will accelerate, argues Koppal District Chamber of Commerce president Ashokswami Herur, who is one of the office-bearers of the separate district committee .
Famous comedian Pranesh aka Gangavati Pranesh also expressed a similar opinion. “If this area becomes a new Kishkindha district with its own characteristics and Gangavati becomes its district headquarters, it will be better in terms of development,” he says.
The demand for Kishkindha as a new district has got the support of all political parties. The new Kishkinda district is planned to include the towns of Gangavathi, Kanakagiri, Karatagi taluk and Tavaragera of Koppal district, Kampli and Sindhanur of neighboring Ballari and Raichur districts, respectively. It is noteworthy that all these areas are irrigated, except for Tavargera, which is rich in granite and dry land agriculture. Thus, there is a movement to bring into existence a separate district comprising areas of commercial importance.
Opinions have also been heard about resorting to bandhs, petitions, dharnas, demands etc. to intensify the struggle. Now the Kishkindha (Gangavati) District Agitation Committee has been brought into existence as part of the plebiscite campaign.
