Landslide on NH 66 in Karwar; ‘Orange’ alert issued for Karnataka coast for Sunday | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: Coastal region of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi And Uttara Kannada There was good rain in the districts throughout the day on Saturday. With more rain expected, the IMD has issued an ‘Orange’ alert for three districts till Sunday.
Landslides have been reported in Karwar taluk of Uttara Kannada district due to incessant rains in the area on Saturday.
A landslide was reported near the tunnel on NH 66 connecting Karwar town to Binga and has been cleared by NH officials. Twelve families in the Baithkol area near the Karwar port are also facing the threat of landslides as the Indian Navy has reportedly cut down a nearby hill to build a road.
On Saturday, the local people alleged that the water flowing from the hill is entering their houses and they are afraid of landslides as the soil has become loose due to filling of soil after the hill was cut.
They demand that the authorities help them immediately. Naval personnel reached the spot and provided temporary relief to these families by removing mud from their houses.
Three places in Uttara Kannada district received the highest rainfall in the state on Friday. They are: Shirwad in Karwar taluk received 141 mm of rain, followed by Mavinakurve in Bhatkal taluk with 137 mm and Kodkani in Kumta taluk with 127 mm. The IMD predicted scattered and widespread light rain throughout the day. Heavy rain occurred at isolated places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in the evening.
Due to Friday’s rains, some vulnerable and low-lying areas such as Jappinmogaru, Hosabettu and Kottara areas were inundated with knee-deep water.
The IMD has already issued a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea from Saturday till June 28, advising fishermen that wind speed between 40-45 kmph is expected along and off Karnataka coasts. There is a possibility of wind blowing at a speed of 55 kmph.
