Lane Markings On Nh-16 Fade After Overlaying Work | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: The lane markings on National Highway (NH) 16, a crucial artery running through the city’s core, are fading because of multiple resurfacing projects, particularly on the stretch between Kuakhai and Kalinga Nagar Square.
This has caused considerable confusion among drivers, who often find it challenging to stick to their designated lanes. The highway is a bustling artery that accommodates a high volume of traffic throughout the day.
The markings on the six-lane flyovers have also blurred not only at the intersections at Nayapalli, Satsang Vihar and Palasuni but also at different portions on the flyovers itself at Jaydev Vihar and Vani Vihar.
The repeated overlaying of the road surface in the meantime has not only obscured the lane demarcations but also made the surface of the highway uneven. These uneven patches significantly increase the risk of accidents, posing a danger to all who travel on NH16.
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, as the likelihood of skidding on these rough spots is greatly amplified. “The absence of clear lane markings on such a busy route is a serious concern for road safety,” said Syed Maqbool Ali, former member, National Road Safety Council.
He said it can lead to erratic driving, as motorists may inadvertently drift from their lanes, potentially causing collisions with other vehicles. The situation demands prompt attention and corrective measures to restore the lane indicators, the road safety expert said.
Commuters, too, said the authorities responsible for highway maintenance need to address the issue swiftly. “Restoring lane markings and repairing the uneven road surface should be prioritised to prevent any mishap, Jajati Kisore Barik,” a commuter said. Srishti Nayak, another commuter, said regular inspections and maintenance are essential to keep the highway in good condition and safe for all users.
The state of NH-16 requires immediate intervention to reinstate lane markings and rectify the uneven road surface, she said. K Nageswar Rao, NHAI’s project director (Bhubaneswar circle) said overlaying work is done and the markings will be restored soon.
