Prayagraj: Akhlaq Ahmed, brother-in-law of jailed mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, has been arrested on charges of providing shelter and financial assistance to one of the attackers of Prayagraj. Akhlaq was then brought to Prayagraj and the remand magistrate last week sent Akhlaq Ahmed, Meerut government doctor and brother-in-law of mafia don Atiq Ahmed, to judicial custody for 14 days. murder case,
A senior police officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity, “We are now trying to find out the role of Akhlaq’s wife Ayesha Noori (sister of Atiq Ahmed) in the Umesh Pal murder case. Ayesha is now wanted by the police and things will become clear once she is arrested.
In 2006, when Atiq was being brought from Sabarmati to Prayagraj for hearing in a case related to the Umesh Pal kidnapping, Ayesha Noori was also seen in the convoy.
Last week, police found a car in the neighboring Kaushambi district which was allegedly used by the assailants after the shooting incident. Police said that Akhlaq and his family knew about this car and more things would be clear after detailed investigation.
Police, however, are piecing together the sequence of events following the Dhumanganj shooting, in which lawyer Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, was killed along with his two police gunners outside his house in Sulemasarai area on February 24 .
